[Now just what the hell is this all about? That jabbering jaw considers firing a witty retort right back--something about money and picking up tricks--but with green eyes looking left then right, the kid decides to just hop right in.]

How'd you pick up somethin' like this without a little breeze of it comin' my way?

[Freddy asks after settling in the front seat. Being a mechanic one would think such a beauty wouldn't escape his notice, that and he lives with Larry. Was it supposed to be a grand surprise? Kinda like how he picked Larry up on his motorcycle?]

[That right there makes his ego swell. Larry's not a super slick criminal beyond all detection, especially in a City this small.]

Sit tight, pal. It's a company car. I gotta do some bird watching, figured I'd bring you along.

[Nice and easy roll as he turns to head in the opposite direction.]

Pretty, ain't it?

[. . . . . . . Give Freddy a moment. He shakes his head once then stares at Larry. Like toucan like kid.] 'Bird watching'? On the clock?

[It doesn't add up but the cop part of him--and the part that knows Lawrence Dimick--already suspects.] Oh yeah, she's pretty sweet, I can't lie about that.

[He runs his palm over the dash.]

[Is it hard to add up? Larry felt it was obvious from the get go. You get a look back at you toucan kid.]

On the clock.

[Does he have to spell it out more?]

She don't get out much, so I figure we can show her a good time.

[And he means just a drive. If there's more in it, then there's more in it. No double, thank goodness. Even better no toucan to watch and be making noise. Not that they're very loud noises but...all the time. At the weirdest times. Plus, the bird hogs a big chunk of the kid's time.]

Okay.

[He responds, acknowledging the hush hush hands offness of the entire affair. The car is a nice ride though, and still rolling about smoothly. How much is it fucking worth now? What did the Mamba do to get it under his company fleet? And further more, if Larry's in charge of this bird watching mission, it must be something particularly confidential.]

What kind of good time? I mean I'm guessin' there's no drive-in to get the mood going.

[That woulda been a new idea. The old man ate already. The ride is so easy he can drive with one hand on the wheel and the other sliding to perch on the kid's knee.]

I figure we make our own fun wherever we go. [Suggestive? Him? Brown eyes glance Freddy's direction.]

Hungry? There's enough time for a drive-thru.

[Green eyes go from the road down to that paw on his knee. He pats the back of it.]

We sure do. How much 'watching' do you have to do?

[He asks because Freddy has genuine concern for Larry not messing up whatever job this is. He shakes his head over food too.] Naw, I'm good. I'm gonna stay awake.

[That's not a potshot or anything, just facts.]

[Fingers rub here and there over the denim.]

Keepin' an eye on a gal to make sure she's not playing around. Last girlfriend and all.

[Like they both could forget. As for the pot shit...]

As am I, I mean, it sure isn't my bedtime.

[That gets a snort out of the kid.]

You're on dame duty?

[Snort snort. Snicker. Okay there's a short laugh. It's a combination of a security/enforcer of sorts having to play private eye for a fellow and Freddy's own relief that this job isn't going to be a violent affair. He should know better, Larry wouldn't take him out on a job like that, right? Does Larry even have jobs like that??]

[Damn right Larry knows better than to bring Freddy along for a violent act. That's asking for trouble, not to mention putting the kid in danger from participation. Who knows who would see him? God forbid nothing go wrong.]

Don't laugh. It's a privilege. I get the car, I get to see whatever I see for free...at least that's the theory. Chances are we won't see shit so I'll get paid for spending time with you and this lady here.

[He taps the dash.]

[Whoa wait a second. He twitches in his seat then commences staring at Larry again.] So...you want to see a show? I mean come on, I know he's just your boss and all but that's cold, man.

[Obviously it's a joke. Another smile and Freddy's able to get comfortable with this situation.] I gotta say it's not a bad proposition, mister. I don't regret hopping in.

Oh I know he's my boss, and my boss knows I'm a very committed man.

[How can he not crow one way or the other about the good life during after hours. How about we leave it at that? Huh?]

That good of a ride already?

[The car he means.]

I'm not complaining. [Freddy gives that paw another pat pat of praise.] What neighborhood is she in?

[He's getting a cigarette out. Nothing like smoking in a classic, unless the boss says no smoking in it oops.]

Good. Or else I'll have to really pull out all the stops to make this a good trip.

[Who says he won't anyway?]

Kinda near the neighborhood we used to live. We better lock the doors just in case.

[Rolling along in the coupe on a cool spring night, it's begging for a smoke. The radio is playing low.]

Who says you won't anyway? You got a lotta temptation on your hands. [Puff puff, smoke ring making Newendyke. Hearing that evokes another laugh from the kid.]

Either she's in a bad way or she's found a working man who knows what's going on under her hood.

Now that you mention it, I do. I found a good looking man who decided to hitch a ride. [That hand creeps up a few inches and stays there to savor the ground covered. If he wanted to,he could stretch his fingers to rub at the fly of his pants. They got a whole stake out to sit through, why rush?]

I want to hope it's the second.

[Because people on the low end of the totem pole don't always dig for gold.]

[Freddy stiffens in his seat--not that way but to better balance the pressure between hand and body to avoid prematurely becoming that way. They got a whole stake out to sit through, why rush?]

You gonna play judge and jury, tough guy? [But not executioner please.]

[He can stiffen that way if he wants however he'll have to literally sit tight until he can handle it. Just in case though his hand will lighten up.]

Nope. Just the eyes. Boss gets all the calls. I appreciate another set of peepers just in case.

How do you want me? [A pause.] I mean on the watch.

[Another pause. Good thing that paw lightened up.] I mean watching what?

The building. I scoped out the right kinda place we can see the walk way right up to the entrance to the place.

[The phrasing, boy this kid. Shit. He loves it. Larry is tempted to pull over and start on his other kind of a joy ride. Now is not the time.]

We also got a view of the window to her hallway. Not the apartment. So I figure, we watch her go in. We watch the door awhile.

[That sound easy enough to Freddy? Otherwise well, fuck. Poor kid could sleep in the back seat if he truly wanted to. They got music at least. What's this? Is Prince coming on?]

[One wonders if bringing the kid along was such a good idea after all. At least good for Mamba's business. Relaxing a little again he taps ash out a window crack.]

Sounds simple enough, boss, I can do that.

[Hell he did similar stints on the job back home, it'll be like sitting in a squad car all over again, except the car is a fucking beauty and his partner is fucking Lawrence Dimick.]

[The old man's admitted to himself that it isn't the most wise of ideas but he has done more stupid deeds. Besides, the pleasure and amusement out weighs the threat--which again he assures himself is not great.]

Smart man. I knew I could count on you.

[And lo! Here they are at the stakeout. The beauty of a car rolls to a parking space.]

I'm a reliable kind of guy.

[A shrug goes here and then it's their stop. Freddy puts his cigarette out on the curb if an ashtray isn't available but in both cases he's still as discrete as ever. Sealed up inside the American Classic again, he looks at Larry. Almost like he's just staring at the old man, which he is.]

Oh I know it.

[Sweet ride that it is the break goes on and the engine turns off simple as pie. Beautiful piece of machinery... honestly, how could he not share? The music stays on, except he turns it down low. Prince is singing about a kiss. He feels those eyes on him now. The lady of the evening isn't in. They've got a window of time.]

[He remarks over that smooth demeanor Lawrence Dimick seems to exude. Freddy's leaning over in his seat towards Larry...ready to test the space in the back.]
