"No, he didn't die. They don't do that kind of shit. It's Happy Days."

[Beep of a button being pressed. Slurping a drink.]

"Well he disappeared."

"Yeah, they call it college. At least in TV land. Either way, after a while it didn't matter."

[More shuffling...and maybe the crinkling of a wrapper...then:]

"You seriously watched Happy Days?"

I think it is a standard in television. All that pressure to make a hit and adapt to the audience's expectations.

Not always. Plenty of shows manage a fluid continuity and rich, diverse characters. But, yeah, some limp along.
